NetSuite Advanced Item Location Configuration

NetSuite for Distributors

If you have items in multiple warehouses and stores, you need a way to track and manage those items easily. The NetSuite Advanced Item Location Configuration feature allows you to use item attributes as a way to manage items. Let’s take a look at how you would set up and use this feature.

Overview

What does the NetSuite Advanced Item Location Configuration feature allow you to do, exactly? With this feature, you can specify item attributes and connect those attributes to specific locations. For example, you can set the item cost for this item in each location. You can also establish the order lead time, set a buffer stock amount, and set the reorder points for this item at each location. Because these types of things can vary from location to location, being able to establish them per location, and not just for the item as a whole, is essential to inventory management.
To use this feature, you will need to make sure two features have been enabled: Advanced Item Location Configuration and Multi-Location Inventory. You can find the Advanced Item Location Configuration feature on the Items section of the Items & Inventory tab in Enable Features. The Multi-Location Inventory feature is located on the same tab under the Inventory section.

Using Item Location Attributes

Once the feature has been enabled, how do you actually set up item location attributes? Navigate to an inventory item record. On this record, scroll down to the Purchasing/Inventory tab and locate the Location subtab beneath that. Here, you’ll see an “Add Location” button.

Select the “Add Location” button. This will open an Item Location Configuration window. Here, name this location configuration. Then, select the subsidiary and location. NetSuite will automatically update the name to include the location name, but you can change that if you wish. You may also add a memo to this record.

To assign location attributes to this item record, use the subtabs. Areas you can assign attributes include Costing, Inventory Count, Order Management, Planning, and Planning Times. Once you’ve established the necessary item attributes for this item in this location, save the record.

Viewing, Editing, and Duplicating Item Location Configurations

After you’ve saved an Item Location Configuration record, return to the original item record and scroll down to the Location subtab under the Purchasing/Inventory tab. Here, you’ll see the location record you added for this item. You may add more item location configuration records using the Add Location button. You may also edit an existing record, or even duplicate the record in order to create a new location configuration with similar attributes.
