Barcode scanners are an important tool for onsite transactions. When integrated with NetSuite, barcode scanners can make Sales Transactions accurate and snappy. But some adjustments might be needed to make the most out of this helpful tool. In this customer story, we explain how we improved a client’s Sales Order process by enabling them to merge duplicate items when using a barcode scanner.

Our Customer’s Problem

At checkout, many businesses use a barcode scanner to speed up the sales process. Our client was able to set up their barcode scanner to add a new line item on a Sales Order for each item scanned. The issue they were encountering, however, was that each scan always added a completely new line, even for already scanned items. This sometimes resulted in an excess of duplicate item lines, all with a quantity of 1. Our client came to us with a desire to merge duplicate items on a Sales Order into a single item line with the corrected total quantity. They did not want this automation to interfere with the scanning process at the counter, however.

Our Solution

There were several solutions we could have taken to solve this issue. The one we chose was adding a custom button called “Consolidate Lines” above the item sublist. This button would initiate a script that scans through all the lines, performs logic to determine duplicate items, and replaces these items with the corrected item lines. So at the checkout, the employee can scan each item normally and then click the “Consolidate Lines” button to merge duplicate items on all Sales Order lines.

Conclusion

We hope this gives you a taste for the variety of workflows SuiteRep can integrate with and improve. Each client comes to us with unique needs and circumstances—some simple, and some complex. Feel free to reach out to us at any time for a free consultation!
